The department has set up a real-time wave monitoring station at the eastern water of Hong Kong as a trial run. The real-time wave monitoring station comprises three main components including an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) deployed on the sea-bed for measurement of wave and current data, a special mark buoy with a modem for transmission of wave and current data, and an office server for storage of wave and current data.
During the typhoon events in 2021, the real-time data transmission was out of order. According to the supplier, air bubbles on rough sea hindered acoustic signal receipt by the modem inside the buoy. Furthermore, wiring of modem or the modem itself should have been damaged by the typhoons, thus the real-time system has been malfunctioned.
We are looking for a solution to achieve real-time wave monitoring during typhoon events.
