To reduce the reliance on counter service for renewal, the department has made continuous effort to promote the use of the other channels (i.e. by post, online and drop box) over the years. However, given that applicants have a strong preference for counter service and wish to get the license at the spot, it is pragmatic for the department to continue exploring whether efficiency of counter service in renewal can be further enhanced by adopting new technical options. To keep pace with the application and omnipresence of innovative technology, it is considered to be essential to study the latest technology development in the market and identify new modes of channel for handling applications.
