StoryTellAR - DIY-AR Treasure Hunt @ Hong Kong
“DIY-AR Treasure Hunt for Hong Kong” is a spatial-data education and tourism platform developed by ConnectAR. This recognition under the CSDI Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Programme shows that ConnectAR’s solution can effectively transform spatial data into practical applications that support Hong Kong’s Smart City development, including smart tourism, smart education and community engagement.

Grounded in contextual learning, DIY-AR Treasure Hunt leverages CSDI open data and authentic local environments to make abstract concepts concrete. For example, a STEAM class can build a route that explains microclimates or urban heat islands around their neighborhood, while a Chinese History class designs an AR trail on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) across traditional neighborhood. Each stop along the route can embed multimedia stories, quizzes and mini-challenges, helping learners construct knowledge in the exact context where phenomena occur. The platform also supports broader policy goals in culture, tourism, youth development and community engagement.
Schools and NGOs can collaborate with local merchants and cultural institutions to deploy AR treasure hunts that guide residents and visitors through district highlights, using game loops such as “join – search – discover – quiz – gift” to encourage exploration and responsible consumption. Optional 3D scanning and VR reconstruction features further extend learning, allowing students to digitally preserve and reimagine Hong Kong’s evolving urban landscape.
As a whole, DIY-AR Treasure Hunt offers schools and community partners a scalable, student-led way to integrate technology, culture and space, building a smarter and more engaged Hong Kong generation.
