The Smartcerts is built on the Blockcerts open standard. Blockcerts is an open standard for creating, issuing, viewing, and verifying blockchain-based certificates. These digital records are registered on a blockchain, cryptographically signed, tamper-proof, and shareable. This allows for easy verification and collection of all digital certificates based on the Blockchain, and can easily provide a digital version of all applicable licensing.

Smartcerts technology allows every person to firstly have their own wallet, which will contain all of their required certification details in one place. A digital version of certificates can be provided as tamper-proof versions that have all of the digital footprint of existing certificates. The security and immutability of the Blockchain means that it is practically impossible to be altered so that it provides a standardised method of verifying licenses. The cost of issuing a single certificate for a transaction is not much, yet the record is immutable and permanent, and the public can independently verify the validity of these licenses and certifications as long as they have access to the Internet through various methods.
